There are plenty of skirting board options for homes today. More and more though people want to choose things that are simple. The choice is for convenience even if that means sacrificing the aesthetic appeal that some of the other options offer. Today though people can choose things like MDF skirting boards that look very much like real wood, but don’t have all the hassle of preparation and maintenance that real wood has.

Wood laminate flooring was the start of the wood like materials being used in homes, but not many people had it in the beginning. Now, many homes have wood laminate floors and they appear in all sorts of colors so it’s hard to tell the real wood from the laminate floors. The same can be said for using MDF in various areas of a home.
Without closer inspection this material can pass as real wood in most cases. The difference is recognized when one realizes there is no maintenance to do on the boards.

With MDF boards you get to skip this step. An MDF board looks just like it will upon installation when you buy it from your local hardware store. This is because MDF does not take a finish of any kind.
This is the same when you are talking about the upkeep needs of MDF boards as compared to real wood boards. Wear and tear happens and that means that real wood boards will probably need to be touched up. You many not need to do any touch up for years, but you will need to be aware of it and be watching to decide when it is necessary.
The real reason you’d want to choose MDF skirting boards is because they just make it easy on you.
